Can you envision Scotland not having ham and cheese croissants? It’s true! I never saw them on any menu, nor did the people I questioned even try this classic combination. Unbelievable! I had no idea this breakfast pastry was such an Aussie thing until I moved to the UK. It’s amazing what you can learn through your travels!

Growing up in Liverpool: The Cafe Classic Ham and Cheese Croissant
Growing up in Liverpool, South West Sydney certainly had its perks, especially in terms of food. Despite not being especially famous for its gastronomy, the diversity of cuisines from different parts of the world that I found there as a child is why I fell in love with food and cooking so deeply.
Whenever my mother and I would go shopping, we would treat ourselves to an incredibly special lunch every once in a while at the café near McDonalds. My mom’s go-to order was always a cappuccino and Mediterranean vegetable focaccia, while I couldn’t help but indulge in a delicious strawberry milkshake and ham and cheese croissant!
Every lunch with my mum was such an amazing treat for me – it made those moments together so special. Even now, I still fondly remember all the foodie adventures we shared growing up.
We had a great time together at every meal – from cream tea, to cafe treats, from steaming bowls of short soup to gigantic doner kebabs that we’d have to divide in two. It felt like the whole world was around us; there was always something new we could discover and experience.
No wonder I love to cook and eat so much!
The French Bakery in Toowong
Way back in the early days of my dating life, before I was diagnosed with celiac, there was this guy I dated who lived in Auchenflower, Brisbane. In the neighbouring suburb Toowong was a French boulangerie widely known for their delicious croissants with ham and cheese.
But what made their treats so special?
This bakery opted for cream cheese instead of the more popular gruyere and swiss cheese for their croissants. Moreover, no slicing task was required for ham and cheese as it was already rolled into the croissant.
Pure decadent and delicious joy.
Food in the West End
I’ve been back in Brisbane for a year now and my work usually had me in the CBD. But recently, I started a new role that has me working daily at South Brisbane near the West End. If haven’t been there lately, you should definitely make a trip down to check it out!
When I arrived in Brisbane twenty years ago, the west end was mainly made up of cafes and thrift stores. Fast forward to today and the area is now brimming with some of the city’s best restaurants, pubs and bars. No matter what you’re looking for, this vibrant neighbourhood has it all!
Working in a foodie paradise like South Brisbane is an absolute delight. Every day, I get to feast on the top-notch cuisines offered by the city and am never short of delicious lunch options! There’s even a rather large Harris Farm here in the West End, filled top to toe with delicious delights. They have an amazing array of celiac-friendly options also.
